mobile: mark all as read / view tags / refreshes page

Not sure if this is by design, but thought I'd ask.

On mobile, if I'm viewing a tag and I mark all as read, return to view tags, pulling down refreshes the page. It seems to be this combination of actions which trigger it: I have to have marked all as read, not just moved between tags.

I'm using the latest version (installed maybe 15-Jan-2026).

feature request: close post when marked read

I believe that it makes sense to close posts when they are marked read. At least, that's the only thing I ever do after marking a post read. It may be that accidentally marking a post read will mean that I have to reopen it, but this is the same as if I'd done so and closed it. Intentionally marking read and closing it is much more common.

Stuck on "selfoss is still loading"

My hosted website had been referencing PHP 7.2.34, which I just updated to 8.*

Selfoss stopped working, so I figured it was time to upgrade. I'd been on 2.17. I followed the steps, and got a 403. So I blew away the whole thing** and got "selfoss is still loading, please wait." So I downloaded the latest build, repeated the process, same story. This is the fully out of the box, not my data directory, install.

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot, please?

*(by changing an A record in DNS, so it's not like I'm really in control of this)
**(I saved my data directory of course)

How to use cron with authentication ?

Hi

I have activated login/pass in Selfoss but unhappy it blocks the cron to run as it gets an authorisation denied from Selfoss.
Is there a way to workaround that ? or to whitelist an IP address for Selfoss so cron script can execute properly ?

Thanks

stopped working with php82-8.2.18

I've been using Selfoss for many years now and love it. Unfortunately it suddenly stopped working. The only change on my side has been an upgrade from an early version of php 8.2.x to php 8.2.18. I'm getting database connection errors with both sqlite and mysql that look like this in the log:

[2024-05-18T19:33:42.850580+00:00] selfoss.ERROR: SQLSTATE[HY000]: General error: 1360 Trigger does not exist {"exception":"[object] (PDOException(code: HY000): SQLSTATE[HY000]: General error: 1360 Trigger does not exist at /usr/local/www/nginx/mywebsite.com/src/helpers/DatabaseConnection.php:140)

I was using sqlite so I switched to mysql to test things and got the same error, yet when I check mysql from the shell the database connection did in fact work and tables got created in a fresh new database, despite seeing the above error.

My main setup is Nginx with PHP-FPM but I've also tested it with Apache24 and mod_php and got the same error, both are running php 8.2.18 now. I also tested both sqlite and mysql on the two different systems with the same result. I read through the PHP changelog and didn't find much of interest with any sqlite updates, just a few changes to PDO since 8.2.0 came out.

My Nginx system runs about two dozen websites, most use mysql with php-fpm and they all work fine. I can connect through sockets or over IP.

I've tried the latest Selfoss builds on Github as well as older Github builds from late 2023. Thought I'd ask here before abandoning the software and trying something else.

Maybe I'm just losing my mind. Happy to switch to another version of PHP to get it working again.

Content-Security-Policy

I'm sharing this to get feedback if I can improve it or to help others. I didn't see anything about it in the documentation. From a bit of testing, I think the minimal Content-Security-Policy header permissions required on the server to allow selfoss to run are:

add_header Content-Security-Policy "default-src 'none'; base-uri 'self'; connect-src 'self'; font-src 'self'; img-src 'self'; object-src 'self'; script-src 'self'; style-src 'self' 'unsafe-inline'; upgrade-insecure-requests; block-all-mixed-content; frame-ancestors 'none';" always;

(This is nginx syntax but you'll get the idea for Apache.)

Any thoughts, please? Maybe to add to the 'nginx configuration' wiki if it looks okay?

Selfoss 2.19 and PHP 8.2

I upgraded from 2.18 to 2.19 and also migrated from PHP 5.6 to 8.2, and Apache to Nginx.

I got Selfoss running but there are some strange things going on.

First, in all my RSS feeds the article images aren't showing. Instead they are replaced with a large cyan-coloured box where each image should be. The images do show up fine in my Twitter: your timeline feed.

Second, when I'm in "Unread" mode and click on "Mark as read" after reviewing all the articles, the view doesn't advance to the next set of articles anymore. Instead the view retains the same set of articles and just shows them all as read. In order to advance I have to click on the "Unread" button again in order to update the view.

Sprout account requirements for Facebook / Twitter

Hello there, thanks for Selfoss.

I thought it would be great to aggregate some content from Facebook and Twitter because so many public figures and organizations don't post their content anywhere else.

Am I correct that in order to access Twitter lists and timeline Tweets, you don't need just the essential (default) developer account, but elevated access?

"
You currently have Essential access which includes access to Twitter API v2 endpoints only. If you need access to this endpoint, you’ll need to apply for Elevated access via the Developer Portal.
" Is there an easier way? My application is being processed.

Though with Facebook I'm getting an error:

error loading feed content: Client error response [url] https://graph.facebook.com/NASAArtemis?access_token=xxx%7xxx&fields=name%2Cpicture%7Burl%7D%2Clink%2Cfeed%7Bid%2Cmessage%2Ccreated_time%2Cattachments%2Cpermalink_url%7D [status code] 400 [reason phrase] Bad Request

Is the sprout no longer functional, or is this likely an issue on my end? I removed my token data. Great work.

Cheers

Using Selfoss with PHP 8

Has anybody been using, or tried to use, Selfoss on a web server that runs PHP 8? How has your experience been?

I've been using Selfoss for about a year and it's been fine so far. This weekend I tried to migrate it to a new server with upgraded software, something I've done before without any trouble, but this time I encountered some errors.

The biggest difference between the servers is that the old one had PHP 7.4.3 and the new one has PHP 8.0.13. That's why I suspect that PHP 8 is the culprit. But it's certainly possible that the problem lies elsewhere and the PHP upgrade is a coincidence.

Here's what I see when I visit my Selfoss installation's home page on the PHP 8 server:

Internal Server Error
Undefined array key "ERROR"

Internal Server Error
Unknown named parameter $expire [/path/to/selfoss/vendor/bcosca/fatfree-core/base.php:2284]

Strangely, there's no reference to a variable named "$expire" on line 2284 or anywhere else in fatfree-core/base.php. Here's what line 2284 looks like:

                call_user_func_array('session_set_cookie_params',$jar);

When I check Apache's error logs, there are dozens of lines that look like this:

I visited the GitHub page for fatfree-core and noticed that there's a newer version than what ships with Selfoss 2.18. Hoping to get lucky, I downloaded fatfree-core 3.7.3 and replaced Selfoss' version with it. This *may have* resulted in some progress, in the sense that the error messages changed. The web page no longer showed Internal Server Error messages; it was devoid of text but had Selfoss' recognizeable checkered background image. Here are the Apache logs that I saw after that:

[Sun Dec 05 17:20:36.115668 2021] [php:notice] [pid 5855] [client 104.237.193.54:36948] Undefined property: helpers\\View::$loggedin

I don't really know what to try next, and even if I did, I suspect it'd just lead me deeper down a rabbit hole of error messages. So coming here for help seems like the next step. Has anybody else had success with PHP 8? Anybody seen error messages like these before? Could I have misconfigured something?

Some background on my setup: it's a basic DigitalOcean droplet, so the CPU is shared but I'm in control of what's on the OS. Ubuntu version 20.04.3, Apache version 2.4.41, PHP version 8.0.13. I'm using an SQLite database. I use the droplet for other things, but Selfoss is the arguably the biggest/most complex.

Bugs / feature requests for 2.19

Hello,

I have been posting bugs to githug, but now I have mostly questions, so I'm posting them here.

I have recently reverted from github version to 2.18 because of several things, which I find annoying. I'm using selfoss on several desktops via Firefox and also on Android mobile phone also with Firefox.

Now to my questions / suggestions.

1) When clicking / taping on another "stream" (or how is "unread" / "starred" / "newest" / etc. called?) in menu (let's say I'm in "unread" and I click "starred") - then last item from old "stream" (in my case "unread") appears focused and open in "starred", even when it is not starred. This also happens when I'm in "unread" and push "r" (reload) - last focused item stays under cursor and is focused / open, even when it is already read. It is also a question, what should happen, when I'm on last item in "unread" and push "r" - in my opinion empty list should appear.

I can imagine this was meant as feature - in this case whatever I click I don't loose my last article, but I find it raher annoying.

2) When I click on "stream" in menu, which I'm actually in (let's say I'm in "unread" and I click / tap "unread") - in 2.18 current stream was refreshed, and I was staying "unfocused" on the stream. Now nothing happens. I was used to refresh stream this way mostly on mobile phone, because hitting "r" is a bit complicated without keyboard. Later I used to refresh by "refresh" Firefox button, but I still think refreshing by "reclicking" current stream name was not a bad idea.

3) "Next" button in mobile version is brokem (again) and does not load next item, but closes actual item and returns to a list. "Next" button is not in mobile interface, I'm using "user.css" to show it. I think it should be visible by default, but I understand this is my own "personal" wish, but anyway - how do you use selfoss on mobile phone? "Next" button is the only action I want to push for maybe 50% of my content... But if user.css will be working, I'm fine with "unhiding" it.

4) When speaking about user.css... I have .entry-toolbar .entry-next and .entry-toolbar .entry-newwindow to display: block. Souldn't be handy to - ehm - have ... "entry-newwindow" always visible on mobile? Just asking. I can imagine some country / area, where there is actually some content in css, but ... everywhere else in universe you have only some perex or maybe only headline and you have to open the article in new window (new tab actually) to show you actual content (and a lot of adds). I think this A++ function, but - I understand - maybe I'm just different person.

5) Now - when we are here - the best. Combination of all the previous annoyments. When I'm on mobile in "unread" and I'm actually on last "unread" item, so everything is read now. I want to refresh the stream, so I hit "three dots" button in Firefox, refresh. Last unread (now allready perfectly read) item appears again. Open. I didn't want to see this item anyway, but now I have to close it (tap anywhere to text) - because "next" button doesn't work - and I'm in list. OK, next item is my first unread item, now I can open it. OK, now I have last unread item open (nothing really interesting) and I want to go to "starred" stream. I have to push "selfoss wheel" and "starred". And now I stand on last "unread" item, which I didn't want to see never more, and - more annoyingly, it is open and I have no "Next" button (or it doesn't work), so I have to close item, and - despite it is still occupying some place on my screen - I'm more or less where I wanted to be - in a list of "starred" items.

(Or do I have some troubles in my installation?)

(Please don't take this as criticism, it's ment to be user feedback. Selfoss is super cool, kudoz to all devs, and I'm on it until end of Google Reader...)

Kind regards,

newbie questions

Hello,

currently I still use feedly for my RSS feeds, but I want to get away from it. In search of alternatives I came across selfoss. I have set up an instance for testing, I get along so far with it. However, I have a few questions:

I'm using version 2.18, which also seems to be the most recent - but that seems to be from 2018. Is selfoss still being actively developed, or am I counting on a dead project?

I currently use feedly from two laptops and a desktop PC (via Firefox), additionally from an Android smartphone (via feedly app). To make this work with selfoss as well, I would then install it in "real" use on a web hosting package. Is the built-in protection via username/password enough to prevent unauthorized access?

I thank you already for the answers!

night mode

What would I have to change in the code to enable a night mode display?

I'm thinking to invert the background & text colors on the main pane showing the feeds. I'd like to end up with a black background and white text, easier on my eyes at night. Love selfoss so much, thank you Tobias! I have been using it daily for almost 8 years now, it's really great

Hide Youtube Images on collapsed records

Hi all,
I've added my first youtube channel to my selfoss installation and I'm quite surprised that the large youtube image (480x360) is always shown, regardless whether section is collapsed or not. There seems to be no parameter to change this, right? Currently my feed then just shows 2 articles due to these large images. Is it somehow possible to place these images into the expanded section part so they are not shown until I click on the title?
Many thanks!

YouTube Kanäle werden nicht angezeigt

Hallo,
habe versucht verschiedene YouTube Kanäle anzulegen.
Als Typ habe ich YouTube Channel verwendet.
Den Link habe ich mir aus dem Kanal selbst über "Teilen..." kopiert.

Folgende Meldung erscheint dann:
2020-09-02 17:53:37error loading feed content: cURL error 22: The requested URL returned error: 404 Not Found

Waldemar

RSSFeeds Spouts expanded, not collapsed by default?

Hello everyone. Got Selfoss up on Ubuntu in no time. Spent days on a Windows Server and never got it working properly :(

Anyway, now that we have the Ubuntu based system in place, we added a feed successfully.

All "spouts" (?) or items in the feed are collapsed by default. Can we have them open or expanded by default as the feeds are refreshed?

Our goal is to put this site on our content monitors around the office to show this data to our user community and if the items are collapsed, we don't see what's inside.

Possible?

Password set, but instance still public.

I migrated a selfoss installation from one server to another. In fact, I made a new installation and migrated db and config.

The old installation I don't know what version is, but it's not using composer or npm. That instance has user/password prompt OK.

The new one is v2.18, I ran composer and npm and all installed OK. The config is the same, but the instance is public (no user/pass prompt). Here's the relevant config section:

username=xxxxxxxxx
password=f143b54f4532ed3fc1e16e3763303a7e8e33a826d6858822fdd469af296972e11268cf343bc567....
salt=lkjl1289
public=0

I hid the user, cut the hash. I also tried with public=, but still same thing. Any ideas?
